Daily disinfection of duck farming equipment is a critical step in ensuring flock health and preventing disease outbreaks.
Daily disinfection of duck farming equipment is a critical step in ensuring flock health and preventing disease outbreaks. Targeted measures must be implemented based on equipment type and farming stage. The following methods integrate physical and chemical disinfection approaches while emphasizing operational details to ensure effectiveness.
The core routine disinfection process is “cleaning → rinsing → disinfection,” and this sequence must not be reversed: First, mechanically remove organic matter such as feces and feathers from equipment surfaces, as organic residues significantly reduce disinfectant efficacy; Next, rinse the equipment with clean water. Finally, apply an approved disinfectant via spraying, soaking, or fumigation. For metal or plastic equipment (e.g., feeders, drinkers), avoid highly corrosive disinfectants. Sodium hydroxide solution is only suitable for floor disinfection and must never be sprayed directly on equipment housing ducks.
Disinfection while ducks are present requires careful control of frequency, method, and environmental factors to minimize stress. Generally, disinfect once daily during the chick-rearing period, 2-3 times weekly during the growing and adult phases, and increase to daily during outbreaks. When spraying, control droplet size between 80-120 microns—larger droplets settle too quickly, while smaller ones may be inhaled by ducks, causing respiratory diseases. The spray volume should evenly moisten equipment surfaces without pooling water. Reduce water volume in humid southern regions; increase appropriately in northern areas or winter.
Operations should ideally occur at dusk or under dim lighting to avoid direct exposure to ducks. Disinfection should be suspended for 3 days before and after live vaccine administration to prevent compromising immunity.
2. Empty-house disinfection requires thorough multi-step procedures:
After each batch of ducks is moved out, first empty the equipment and perform sweeping and rinsing. followed by spraying floors and corrosion-resistant equipment with a 3% sodium hydroxide solution. After 24 hours, rinse with a high-pressure water jet. Once dry, switch to a different disinfectant (e.g., chlorine-based agents or peracetic acid) for another spray application. Finally, seal the area for fumigation (e.g., formalin + potassium permanganate) for over 24 hours, followed by thorough ventilation.
During fumigation, ensure shed temperature is 18-28°C (64-82°F) with humidity >70%. Use corrosion-resistant containers with sufficient volume.
